Intertek extends corrosion monitoring work for Copenhagen Metro

June 14, 2016

Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, has been awarded a new contract to provide corrosion monitoring for the Copenhagen Metro extension project.

The scope of the contract will see the Intertek team design, supply, install and commission a corrosion and stray current monitoring system for Nordhavn, the northern extension of the city’s metro. The system will provide vital corrosion data, which will enable lifespan predictive modelling to be carried out.

The additional work on Nordhavn builds on Intertek’s success in delivering a corrosion and stray current monitoring system for the Cityringen metro extension, one of Europe’s largest underground rail construction projects. Cityringen will provide a new line for Copenhagen Metro and is scheduled for completion in 2019, with the Nordhavn extension set to open the following year.

Intertek’s corrosion team will embed a series of probes, sensors and measurement instruments at four locations in the new extension, as well as the network and management software to support the sensors. Following installation, the system will be managed by the metro from its control centre.

Tom Gooderham, Business Manager for Instrumentation at Intertek Production and Integrity Assurance said: “Our sensors are designed to deliver corrosion condition, corrosion rate and stray current profile information to track any material degradation in the new infrastructure, ultimately helping operators maintain the network for many decades to come.

“We have worked with the Copenhagen Metro Team over the past three years and this additional contract strengthens our relationship with them. The extension of the Copenhagen Metro will connect key areas of the city and we are honoured to be contributing to the safety and integrity of this major engineering project.”

Upon its completion, Cityringen will expand Copenhagen’s current metro network by 17 stations and will include an automated 24-hour driverless operating system. The Nordhavn extension will expand the metro into the north of the city where a commercial and residential building development designed to accommodate 40,000 people is under construction. It is estimated that the Copenhagen Metro will carry 130 million passengers annually by 2025.

Intertek’s instrumentation team is also working on high-profile projects including Scotland’s Queensferry Crossing and the Eurasia Tunnel in Istanbul. Scheduled for completion in 2018, the Eurasia Tunnel will link two continents via a subsea highway tunnel for the first time.
