Santa Clara, CA - Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider to industries worldwide, will be discussing Best Practices in Asset Integrity Management Systems, as well as the Economics of Power Plant Cycling, at the 22nd Annual International Pressure Equipment Integrity Association (IPEIA) Conference from 7th-9th March in Banff, Canada.

Nikhil Kumar, Managing Director of Asset Integrity Management (AIM) at Intertek, will present on power plant cost of cycling.  With more renewable energy sources being added to the electricity grid, traditional fossil, nuclear and hydro power plants have had to operate with more flexibility (or cycling), resulting in higher operating costs. Most traditional power plants were not designed for cycling operations, resulting in equipment damage and therefore increased operating costs and risk of failure. Power generation stakeholders including operators, owners and analysts are looking to understand the impact of cycling.

Also presenting is Dr. Stephen Ciaraldi, Intertek AIM, who will discuss best practices in Asset Integrity Management (AIM). The goal of any AIM program is to effectively manage corporate assets to gain maximum value from those assets while safeguarding personnel, the community, and the environment. AIM strategies are an ongoing activity, managing risk and safety, throughout the life cycle of an asset, while adjusting to current and future challenges that may impact the asset's and the owner's stated goals. The presentation will share best practices and lessons learned over several AIM implementations around the world.

Nikhil Kumar stated: “Intertek brings deep industry expertise across the petrochemicals, utilities and renewables sectors to deliver Total Quality Assurance to our customers. With rapid changes in power generation sources, we have seen increased demand for technical expertise to help operators maintain reliable and safe assets, while delivering optimal performance. The IPEIA conference is an important event for the industry. In its 22nd year, the conference continues to foster industry education and improve best practices in asset integrity in the energy sector. Intertek’s participation means we can share our trusted expertise to ensure customers’ assets operate safely and reliably.”

About Cost of Cycling

*Cycling--the operation of electric generating units at varying load levels including starting and stopping, load following and minimum load operation--causes additional and more rapid wear and tear of power plant components. Intertek is a leading expert in determining the cost of cycling power plants, as well as managing asset reliability and providing guidelines to minimize equipment damage and improve operational efficiency.
