Sequence IX Test (ASTM Draft)

Engine

The Sequence IX Test utilizes a 2012 Ford 2.0 liter, spark ignition, four stroke, 4-cylinder gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine. Features of this engine include variable camshaft timing, dual overhead camshafts driven by a timing chain, four valves per cylinder and electronic direct fuel injection.

Test Operation

The Sequence IX Test evaluates the ability of an automotive engine to mitigate pre-ignition in the combustion chambers in gasoline, turbocharged, direct-injection (GTGI) engines under low-speed and high-load operating conditions. This test method is commonly known as the Ford low-speed, pre-ignition (LSPI) test. In vehicles, equipped with relatively small gasoline GTDI spark-ignition engines, pre-ignition has occasionally occurred when the vehicles are operated under lowspeed and high-load conditions. Uncontrolled, pre-ignition may cause destructive engine damage. The test procedure is conducted in four iterations. Each iteration is 175,000 engine cycles in length.
